Causeway, Ireland Scotland Business Exchange, in partnership with the Consulate General of Ireland in Scotland will be hosting an event entitled “Empowering Future Generations of Women Leaders” on 25th November 2019.

We will invite a panel of inspirational women from the business, education and cultural fields to speak about their experiences of championing women particularly from early in their careers, and the benefits they have seen in doing so.

There will be an opportunity for discussion as to how to best empower women and inspire them to become future leaders and excel in their chosen professions.

The panel discussion will be followed by a networking reception at the Consulate of Ireland in Edinburgh.

Alex Hems has spent twenty years working in leading girls’ schools. A mother of two daughters, she is well steeped in girls education and is passionate about the benefits of a seamless single-sex education. She is dedicated to supporting young women so they are empowered to fulfil their true potential. Alex started her career at Alleyn's School in London, a co-ed all-through school where she taught English and Latin. After three years she moved to St Paul's Girls' School, also as a teacher of English and Latin. During her seven-year tenure, she was involved in setting up a partnership programme with local state and independent schools and became a Head of Year. In 2003 she moved to North London Collegiate School where as Head of Sixth Form, she continued to teach English across the age range and oversaw the first years of the IB Diploma at the school. Alex prizes international experience and the manifold benefits of learning in a global context. In 2007, after her marriage and the birth of her children, she returned to St Paul's as Head of Senior School (Sixth Form). In 2011 she moved to take up the post of Deputy Head of Francis Holland School in London before moving to Wycombe Abbey School in 2013 as a Deputy Head; here she took on responsibilities for the pastoral life of a full boarding school. Alex was a Governor at St George's School, Ascot before joining Edinburgh's only private all-through girls' school, where she focuses on nurturing confident, well-rounded individuals with a ‘Yes I Can’ outlook on life. Alex did her PGCE at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and her degree in English at Somerville College, Oxford. In between, she taught for a year in Switzerland in the state system.
